We have been told many times over that the approaching age of automation will have considerable impacts on jobs and the way we work.

As bots increasingly take responsibilities away from us humans, it’s our expertise, creativity and emotional intelligence that will be key to excelling in the workplace. A major shift in the nature of job responsibilities necessitates an equally major shift in the way employees are prepared for such responsibilities, and apparently the learning and development industry is already aware of, and beginning to adapt to, tomorrow’s demands.

In a 2018 report on automation trends in learning and development, LinkedIn surveyed 4000 talent development professionals, executives, employees and people managers to determine how automation is already shaping the industry. This is what the report found.

Soft Skills Are the Future

In 2018, the number one learning and development trend identified by talent professionals was softening the impact of automation. With machines doing more and more of the everyday grunt work in our roles, it’s the exclusively human skills like creativity and critical thinking that require increased training investment.

“Soft skills—which are needed to effectively communicate, problem solve, collaborate and organise— are becoming more important for success as the workplace evolves socially and technologically.”

Staying Ahead of the Curve on Rapidly Evolving Skills

While most learning and development still focused on training for today, there is an increasing push for training for tomorrow at the same time. The simultaneously rapid rise and fall in demand for new skills means employers need to be ahead of the game if they want to prevent skills gaps.

Employers Must Find Ways to Offer Training to Earn Employee Loyalty

With 94% of respondents saying they would stay in their job longer if offered career development opportunities, the real challenge for employers is how they incorporate training into busy schedules. The key is “meeting them on the platforms they are already using.”

Learning and Development’s Value is Unquestionable

Nine out of ten executives said learning and development is crucial to business success. More than a third of those surveyed anticipate an increase in training budgets, with the bulk of such increases going to soft skill training. Only 11% of participants think there will be a decrease.
