A recent survey of over 3,700 office based workers has confirmed something which most of us already know - a constantly high workload causes more stress than any other factor at work.

47% of those surveyed said that their volume of work was more of a concern than issues with their boss and colleagues, job security or work/life balance.

_ FIRST WORD FROM ME

Welcome to another edition of Cliftons.Communication and happy new financial year to all!

What an interesting time of year it is & Cliftons have seen our training facilities packed full leading up to June 30 with many clients squeezing in last minute training before the end of the financial year. The new financial year has been no different, with customers starting the year strong by training their staff, clients and partners.

Cliftons Adelaide Training Facility marked the occasion on Friday, 29 June with an "End of Financial Year Celebration" . Around 100 guests joined us to see off the year and meet the Cliftons Adelaide team - see below for photos.

Most people these days complain of feeling tired after a busy week, but despite this, too many are struggling to complete everything that needs to be done.

The volume of work each one of us has to manage is badly affected by the high number of interruptions faced each day. A mixture of phone calls, meetings, colleagues dropping by and, worst of all, emails interrupt workers an average of every 11 minutes. These energy sapping interruptions cause major problems in refocusing on the job in hand, which can easily lead to demotivation, procrastination and mistakes.

The answer is to be shown how to manage a high workload and constant interruptions more effectively.

ABOUT PRIORITY MANAGEMENT

I'd also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Cheryl McMahon (pictured), Cliftons Melbourne Facility Manager.

Priority Management is a global leader in workload and time management training. Over 1 million people have enjoyed the benefits of Priority training programs, which are held at Cliftons. Graduates often report saving an hour a day after completing the training.

Many of you will know Cheryl who celebrated her five year anniversary with Cliftons earlier this month. Congratulations Cheryl!

Don't forget - if you'd like to contribute to Cliftons.Communication, please speak with your Account Manager or email me (karlie.pearson@cliftons.com).

Happy reading!

_ HUBB FINANCIAL RAISES MUCH NEEDED FUNDS FOR
BREAST CANCER RESEARCH

_ MAKE YOUR WORKSPACE
WORK FOR YOU

Director, Operations and Client Relations
Holistic Services Group

On Thursday 7 June 2007, around 300 people attended the HUBB Financial Trivia Night, in aid of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, at the Harbord Diggers Memorial Club, Sydney.

What started out as a team building exercise for the financial services company quickly snowballed into a sizeable fundraising event with the support of the local community. Numerous local businesses donated prizes and auction items ranging from a signed Wallabies jersey to a mini Malibu surfboard, Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb tickets and a pink leather handbag.

The importance of the fundraising initiative was highlighted by the guest speaker and breast cancer survivor, Dorothy Fletcher, with her compelling presentation.

Trivia teams included the Pittwater Pinks breast cancer survivors, HUBB Financial staff and families and even a table from Cliftons. A fantastic time was had by all and the Cliftons team would like to thank HUBB Financial for the invitation.

All proceeds from the event were donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

New Scientist magazine recently reported that the number one stress busting technique isn't heading to a tropical island, but in fact is creating a good workspace.

Here are some tips to create a good workspace (and reduce absenteeism!):

Ensure your workspace is not too cluttered, cramped or near loud, annoying co-workers

Lighting, chairs, workstation, temperature, ambience and even the height of partitions is important (not more than 1.3m so employees do not forget they are not alone)

Plants are great - they are pleasing to the eye, and gobble up pollution. Proven species include Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily); Howea Forsteriana (Kentia Palm); Dracaena Marginata (Marginata); Dracaena Deremensis (Janet Craig); Epipremnum Aureum (Devil's Ivy)

_ EFFECTIVE MEETINGS

ABOUT HOLISTIC SERVICES GROUP

We spend so much of our time attending meetings, video and tele-conferences these days that it's important to ensure they are effective, to the point and relevant.

Face to face meetings and video conferencing provide the benefit of additional communication through facial expressions and body language. We rely more on physical and tonal communication than by the words we speak, so when getting together in person remember the following five rules to maximise your meeting effectiveness:

1] Only contributing parties should attend a meeting: Keeping your colleagues 'in the loop' is wasting your time and theirs. You can always send out relevant notes later.

2] Set a clear agenda stating each item, its purpose and the key stakeholders: Set time limits and phrase agenda items around results. Avoid general concepts - they will lead to circular discussions and potential time wasting.

3] Ensure the agenda and any associated documents are circulated and read before the meeting: Make it an expectation that all attendees arrive prepared - this save time and improve interaction.

4] Ensure the environment allows participants to concentrate on the matter at hand: The importance of a well maintained meeting room away from ringing phones and the temptation of email cannot be underestimated. Ensure your meeting room has adequate natural light, temperature control and airflow, as well as ergonomic chairs, functioning audiovisual equipment and fresh filtered water. If you cannot find internal meeting space to match these requirements - outsource.

5] Control the meeting: Unless you are trying to facilitate a free flowing brainstorming, out of the box creative session, be assertive and keep the meeting on track.

Remember your meeting goals, stick to the agenda and keep the group focused on achieving meeting results within the desired time frame.

Enjoy your next meeting!
